Save Our Supplements: Say NO to Slashing Our Health Choice
Across Ireland, thousands of consumers rely on high-potency vitamins, minerals, and herbs to support their immunity, energy, and long-term wellness. However, this access is now under immediate threat from restrictive EU proposals to harmonise Maximum Permitted Levels (MPLs).
What is Happening?
The EU intends to dramatically slash the dosages of the supplements you use every day. By adopting a “one-size-fits-all” precautionary model originally designed for hazardous chemicals rather than nutritional science, regulators are proposing limits that could render many products nutritionally insignificant.
Where is the logic?
These changes are being discussed without sufficient public input, threatening to dismantle a proven Irish “Natural Health Ecosystem” that has operated safely for decades under strict FSAI guidance.
The “Potency Rollback” in Numbers
If these proposals pass, the impact on your health regime will be transparently negative:
* Vitamin D: Current Irish guidance of 100µg/day faces a 45% reduction down to just 55µg/day.
* Vitamin B6: Potencies could be slashed from the current Irish safe level of 20mg down to as little as 5.69mg.
* Essential Minerals: Massive reductions are proposed for Magnesium and other minerals essential for recovery and energy.
Why This Matters to You
Restricting these levels doesn’t just reduce choice; it forces you to pay more for less. Effective therapeutic doses may be reclassified as “medicinal,” removing them from health food store shelves and placing them behind a pharmacy counter or requiring a prescription. This creates an unnecessary barrier to personalised nutrition for athletes, those managing menopause, or anyone with higher physiological requirements.
